Jennifer Hitchman - Copyright, Fair Use and Plagiarism Blog

Hello teachers, parents and students!  This weeks blog will review the importance of Copyright, Fair Use and Plagiarism all of which are necessary to understand when you are tasked with writing an essay, paper, story or blog.  Because there are so many images and information readily available on the web you may think you are able to use all that is there, but in reality, there are rules regarding the right to use the information found.

The dictionary states that Copyright is "the exclusive legal right, given to an originator or an assignee to print, publish, perform, film, or record literary, artistic, or musical material, and to authorize others to do the same."  This means that if you use any image or print that is copyrighted you will need to have permission to post the original authors information.

Fair Use refers to the ability to use some material without having to obtain permission from whomever owns the Copyright.

When writing papers and essays what you want to avoid at all is costs is plagiarism which is, passing another persons work off as your own.  Plagiarism like copyright infringement are serious offenses on the web and in general.  In order to avoid plagiarism be sure to write in your own words and give credit where credit is due!
